Lichfield District Council’s aim was to develop a new leisure centre that would benefit the local community and promote active lifestyles. Years in planning, the council were facing rising costs of construction and pressure on existing operational costs. Previously quoted costs for traditional construction methods were untenable for the council and alternative solution was needed. Lichfield DC approached ReCreation, initially for feasibility of an above ground pool option Additionally, the project brief required assessment of a new 3G pitch, an outdoor changing room, car park and landscaping.
Having close collaboration with Lichfield District Council, planning teams, stakeholders, user groups, and extensive public consultation, the original brief was developed and enhanced. The pool design was updated to feature a varied depth from 1.2m to 1.8m, expanding its suitability for a broader range of users. This allows for activities such as diving instruction, competitive race starts, artistic swimming, and water polo, meeting the specific needs of the local swimming clubs.
Construction is currently underway, with completion expected in December 2025. The scheme is on track to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, indicating strong environmental performance and efficient operational costs. The development will also deliver a Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) significantly exceeding the 10% target, emphasising ReCreation’s commitment to sustainability and ecological enhancement.
